Suzuki Cello Group 5+ will serve as a supplement to individual lessons for cellists. I look forward to being your musical guide as we choose special performance settings and bring a polished body of literature forward for new audiences! Some musical skill areas that you can expect to attend to and improve during the course include the following:

  • Increased flexibility in the bow arm/left hand – you will use a novel series of warm-up activities and exercises.
  • Faster identification of tricky spots in the Suzuki repertoire – you will preview them slowly and learn ways to effectively practice.
  • Successful creation of sight-reading strategies – you will learn cello ensemble parts, switch voices, learn to blend, and plan special performances.
  • Heightened awareness of different harmonies/tonalities – you will demonstrate common “performance practice” and learn about influential composers of each musical stylistic period.
  • Deliberately mapped sequences – you will learn to listen for and play to listeners in a way that clearly demonstrates phrases and formal structures.

Those who study in Book 5 and up, or are working on literature that requires similar technical skills, are welcome. In the class, we will focus on developing ensemble skills, will learn music theory, and will explore music history. Suzuki Cello Group 5+ will meet weekly on Fridays, costs $88 for four meetings, and will continue through July. Read Vincent Leung’s Faculty Page here.
