Cello Practice Club x 2! = April :)

Cello Practice Club is a wonderful way to work on cello playing skills with friends and/or family! We learn and review different techniques based on what the students are interested in and what they could benefit from working on, particularly what is needed to have a successful school orchestral experience. This class is stress free and fun, and great for building cello playing abilities. During Cello Practice Club in April students worked through the Essential Elements book while continuing to develop their bow holds, posture, and sight reading abilities. Cello Practice Club had two sections this time, that met on Monday nights in April.

At 6:30, Ms. Julia got together with third grade twins from NYC! Vincent and Anthony shared a zoom screen from their home, which enabled them to play together and clap rhythms simultaneously. The brothers showed great progress with bow angle, sight reading, and playing songs such as Au Claire De La Lune and the Buckeye Salute, from beginning to end. We also had fun with a game of Cello Bingo during the last class. Vincent and Anthony both improved wonderfully this month, with the cello bow hold and bow placement, and with rhythmic accuracy. Good Job!

Then, starting at 7:00, Ms. Julia met with two third graders who are best friends, and learning cello together in the North Allegheny school district. This was Drew and Coleton’s second month of Cello Practice Club, and they have shown an incredible amount of progress! Coleton and Drew focused on learning new notes and supporting the cello with good posture. They both learned G string notes quite easily, and were able to immediately add these into sight reading exercises. Drew has shown great progress in his left hand set up and by using more bow, now is able to get more sound from the instrument. Coleton has improved with the amount of bow pressure he uses on the string, and we are working to find an endpin height that will be most comfortable and helpful for his “set up”. The boys are quick learners, eager to pick up new notes and work on pieces such as Baa Baa Black Sheep and This Old Man. They even tried out a bit of conducting in 4/4 meter (to prep for school rehearsal) and enjoyed playing “cello tag” with songs they learned well.

One student’s school orchestra teacher commented on how much the student has improved since starting Cello Practice Club! And in an email, a parent wrote “the boys both really enjoy the lessons and look forward to seeing the fun activities you have planned each week.” Thank you for being a part of this fun CYM Course!
