Welcome to Craft Your Music’s first official Woman Crush Wednesday post! For our first edition, we are celebrating Ms. Caroline Shaw! Ms. Shaw is an violinist, singer and composer. In 2013, Ms. Shaw became the youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her a cappella piece Partita for 8 Voices.

Originally from Greenville, North Carolina, Ms. Shaw started learning the violin when she was two years old by taking lessons with her mother. At the age of 10, she began writing music imitating the works of Mozart and Brahms‘ chamber music. Shaw attended Rice University and earned her Bachelor of Music in violin performance in 2004, and then obtained her master’s degree from Yale University in 2007. Finally, Shaw entered the PhD program in composition in Princeton University in 2010. Ms. Shaw has appeared in numerous musical acts throughout her career. She is a violinist with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and as a vocalist with the performing group Roomful of Teeth. She even co-produced the remix of Kanye West’s “Say You Will”, “Wolves“, and contributed vocals to “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2”.
