Never Hurry, Never Rest
How did she do it? As Clara prepares to Graduate from Suzuki Piano Book 6 with a solo recital this weekend, the answer to that question, according to her parents, is what they had envisioned for her from the start.
Relaxed and consistent practice, from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, has become Clara’s habit. Piano is just a part of her routine as practice is woven stress-lessly to the fabric of her family’s life together.
Clara’s technique is strong. To present Book 6, mastery of these skills is required:
- 2 against 3 rhythm
- Portato technique
- Modern musical interpretation (Villa Lobos is very modern sounding yet not very melodic)
- Advanced Baroque trills and ornaments
- Balancing multiple melodic voiced happening at once (accompaniment, melody, and counter melody happening simultaneously, and at three different dynamic levels)
Clara’s understanding of the value of community connection is evident. She said, “Yes!” to an invitation to become her high school chorus’s accompanist which has significantly expanded her repertoire and her social opportunities. Clara made time to learn independently chosen pieces and this has augmented her musical skill set.
Clara’s growth through music has created in her a maturity that she easily lends to daily transitions. She watches out for her siblings, making sure they have their instruments and music ready before walking into to a lesson or getting on stage and even occasionally looks in on their home practice. She knows what it is to advance with calmness and joy, and models this naturally to those around her.
Go to the Craft Events Calendar for free tickets for the recital on Sunday, May 22, at 12 pm at CYM Sewickley. All students are welcome: those who are preparing for their own recital, those who are still determining which instrument they might study, and those who just want to enjoy a beautiful presentation by an accomplished young musician, piano student of Ms. Grace Burns!
